The Quality of Difference
"The Quality of Difference" naturally gives meaning to people's lives because the tendency towards variety, variables and variation creates uniqueness;

Vice versa "sameness" as the tendency towards universal uniformity takes away meaning from people's lives, reducing people to numbers without character.

Obviously there needs to be a balance between difference to enrich the lives of people and the need for sameness to allow technology to reach everyone.

People are not robots and robots are not people and yet the very esence of humanity (cultural difference) is daily being overwritten by the drive for unnecessary universal uniformity. WHY???

The Quality of Difference
Dear Frank,

Two words come to mind when thinking about sameness: nationalism and capitalism. And, as we all know, this duo plays a very important role for architecture, planning, etc., advocating blueprint solutions to everything. And, unfortunately, universalist humanism and modernism are implicated in this outcome too.

The Quality of Difference
Dear Ozgur, I have just found your post on my topic, I surfed for "the quality of difference" (the title of my IL paper in 1993) and this topic popped up. I missed your post at the time (November 2005) because I was in Turkey and trying to help establish an english language course for Turks.

As you say Capitalism is responsible for the drive towards the universal uniformity of products regardless of culture, climate and environment is because of mass production; whereas, modern humanism because it equates equality with the universal uniformity of thought within humanity which is a completely different and much harder issue to address or eradicate.

And there is a need to eradicate such a reductionist ideology because it threatens the very ability of humanity to survive through diverty, because no human culture can lay claim to having created or contributed all the thought necessary for the survival of humanity.
