Generators of architecture
The main generators of architecture are denoted as being:

1.) User
2.) Context
3.) Activity pattern
4.) Higher purpose

If any one here has any other ideas regarding this or have any information that I can get regarding this topic, please do let me know. Thanks a bunch.

Tilanka, Your "activity pattern" or use function depends upon whether the building exists or needs to be built:-

If there is a building in existence then reuse (different function use) and the design work is the adaption of the existing spaces to match the new use.

If there is no building in existence then the design work is the creation of spaces needed to match the use purpose.

"User" is ambiguous because today most architecture is speculative development which is not actively used by the owner. Therefore "Developer owner" and "End user" describes architecture built for an owner, but not used by the owner and leased or rented out to end users.

"Context" depends upon whether or not the design compliments or contradicts the surrounding context. Complimentary design is a synthesis of the context. Whereas, contradictory design can be an antithesis of the context. Your choice.

Note: There is a lot of confusion today in design, in that antithetic design is seen as the obvious alternative to synthetic design, but there is a third choice in "catalytic design" which is neither synthetic nor antithetic. :)))

"Higher purpose" same as for "context".

First of all, thanks for the response. What I was implying is that there are generators to any type of architecture, be it a hospital, a museum, or a house. And the generator therefore depends upon the type of development.

Within the generator itself there are primary generators secondary generators tertiary, etc. For example, when you take personalised housing, the primary generator is the user. And when you take a hospital for instance, the main generator would be the activity pattern and the secondary generator most probably would be the user.

Very good, Tilanka,

I am really pleased you can tackle the subject very well and wish you good-luck. As you know that in Indian culture roti/kapada/makan is the preferred hiearchy in the sense, first the individual looks for food sustainability, next is clothing and at last housing. In the free enterprising society the individual or group normally follows this pattern. In the past geographic locations decided about the city footholds and people and their activities led them to prosperity and pramotion of architecture. In fact necessity at particular place generates architecture, for example development of express way generates nodes of development at both ends, and restrooms and fuel, and support station at particular intervals are nessesity of the system, say toll-collection center at both ends, are also necessity. I understand that the system nessesity generates architecture to make it function better.

In fact all your four points acts together and justify necessity of the system at a particular place and time.

Tilanka, Okay, perhaps you can split your four generators into two sets?

(a) Higher Purpose is the pre-motivator and Activity pattern is the pre-processor.

(b)User is the post-motivator and Context is the post-processor.

Generators of architecture
thnx again for the response. again i would like to stress that ofcourse these 4 generators can work together infact in most cases they do. but there has to be a primary generator and other moderating generators which effect the final outcome. the higher purpose generator is kinda blurry to me though. when considering an hospital u can take activity pattern as the primary generator but when considering a hospital for aids patients the user is the main generator. so this implies that we cant select a generator interms of building catogorization. or am i completely wrong??? totally confused..

Tilanka, I would rearrange your four generators as follows:- (1) Principle + Purpose (aka Higher purpose), (2)Context / parameter (context), (3)Typology / pattern) (user activity pattern), (4) Methodology / process + product (design activity pattern).

My own personal design mantra is:- Principle / Purpose / parameter / pattern / process / product.

Remember that the design process works in "cycles" which allows the design to be checked and rechecked throughout. :)

I hope the above is clearer?
