Does anyone have anything to say about the OMA building in Porto? Quite iconic... I would like to hear specially who knows Porto, lives in Porto...uses the building!

My only objection to modern "the aliens have landed" architecture is that such buildings have neither contextual nor cultural connections and so could be put anywhere on the planet and still remain meaningless. Maybe the motive is to show humanity as being meaningless, but such a nihilistic agenda is empty.

Well,

Deconstructionists' writings always justify there works, with great concepts and difficult terminology. Even if the building is alien to the environment, they will rationalize it by saying: we aim to displace the traditional form of the buildings, break the expectance of the users, and respond to the surrounding condition by representing the absence by make the user fell that something is missing.

It's very easy; you just make the building the way as you like, and then defend it by essay or article. ;)

Azfar, back in the early 1990s when deconstruction and deconstructivism or deconstructionist first appeared. I bought two books and then had to use a large dictionary to define the strange words used. This old technique of using mystifying words is known as "baffle them with science" although there was nothing scientific.

My conclusions after reading were that deconstruction uses the Derrida agenda of decaying / destroying what already exists, as a reverse form of creation.

The known paradox of "destruction / creation" (to create something new, one destroy must something else) was warped to mean that only through destruction and decay can there be true creation.

In fact the Derrida agenda went further in that "creation" only happens through destroying text and context and making a meaningless and contextless design. This of course is orthodox nihilism.

Susan, yes, as you say, the normal explanation is that by "creating an absence" (a meaningless nothingness) then people will understand their understanding of life is incomplete. To me this is like those modern paintings of "white on white" of a completely blank canvas with nothing there. You then have to imagine what the artist is saying with his painting, but because there is nothing there, then the artist can assume the intellectual high ground by saying that his / her thoughts are beyond the understanding of everyone.

I have to disagree with those of you saying that the Casa da Musica does not fit its context. I agree that the building is huge, and that the shape seems more like an attempt to be smart than to fit the context. But somehow it works. The Rotunda where it is situated is so typologically complex and messy, that Casa da Musica generates a new order at the place. It dominates the place completely, but in a good fashion. Koolhaas has designed a building that looks great in magazines--but it also looks great in Porto.

Mikkel, I see you put ethnology (the study of human cultures) as your field. If that is the case then you must be learning some very strange ideas about what human culture means, as this Casa da Musica (House of Music)has no cultural context and looks like a lump of the usual utopian modern sculture.

After hearing all this architectural philosophy, I really would like to hear from people living in Porto and having to coop with the building daily...

I have heard there was some polemic going on in the city while the building was getting built! How is the Porto public opinion nowadays after Casa da Musica was built and used by its citizens?

Anyone want to jump in to talk about it?
