Design -- General

Progress in architecture
How has architecture progressed across civilizations? What styles, elements, or technologies were developed to meet the needs of the particular civilization?

Michelle,

These issues depend upon what you mean by "architecture". The natural design of architecture is both ecological and evolutionary and in physical terms is usually specific to a particular permutation of climate and environment. Overlap/overlays of difference occurs where there is cultural or climate change.

On the other hand, architecture, design, construction techniques and the uses of materials can and do cross cultural boundaries; spatially (from country to country) and temporally (from the past to the present).
