Aribah,

It always helps ArchNet members to know a little more about your project in order to provide you with suggested readings and references that you can look up.

If you do share this, I'm sure people will come forward to help you out.

Thanks, Aftab, for responding. Actually my thesis researched what impacts architecture has on our health, physically as well as psychologically, the good as well as the bad effects. I studied different factors such as light, color, texture, materials, air, environment, etc. Now for my thesis topic I have decided to do a project on a health and fitness center which would be health giving, and a place which an urbanized city like Karachi badly needs.

Aribah,

I think you need to make contact with professionals in this vocation. I hope this site is helpful:

www.healthcaredesignmagazine.com

Health care design magazine is one of the most useful in this field. If you do enter this site, I'm sure you will find professionals who can help you out.

Aribah,

I recommend a read of "The Ten Books of Vitruvius" by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius (reprinted in English by Dover Publications Inc).

I was interested to read this architect's views on the proper placement of buildings to avoid unhealthy places such as swamps with malaria, etc. :)))

Frank,

Thanks! Well I'm looking at ancient studies such as that by Vitruvius and found out that it is the first study on the impact of the built environment on health. Besides this, I'm also going through Vastu Shastru, Feng Shui and even Islamic principles as they are often derived on the basis of the impact of built environment on our health.

What I'm confused with right now is the project that I should undertake which would wrap up all my findings. I was thinking of a 'health n fitness' center which would be a health giving place, but the question that arises is that if people would visit it for a very short period of time, it would not have a great impact. But that short span would have a lasting impact and it would leave you refreshed for the rest of the day:- confused.
So please post in any ideas. It would be of great help.

I feel you should take up a project like a health resort. These kind of projects have health centres, meditation areas and a general resort where people come up to de-stress on vacations. This can help you depict the effect of architecture along with the therapies on human health and psychology.

Aribah,
Since you are still contemplating the type of building you'd prefer designing for your thesis, I'd recommend you to design a hospital.

As hackneyed as it may sound, it would still be refreshing if you could come up with new ways of perceiving a hospital's design which combines your studies in materials and built forms with the strict constraints of its functional requirements.

It is one of those building types that combine several different facilities into one functioning body making it a daunting task to design well. Not many hospitals have a sensitive apporach to design and given its primary purpose to treat patients in distress, it might be one of the ways which could help materialize your research.

slam,

My name is Muhammad Ahmed. I am a student of architecture in my final year of school. I am studying the effects of architecture on psychology. I want to justify my research by designing a children's hospital. I want to give children a space to forget their disease in a healing environment. What kind of positive psychological effects can design have for children? I would like people to share their ideas. In the context of Karachi, we have our only children's hospital near jinnah hospital, which is not a suitable site; its environment is not such to have a positive effect on the psyche of children, but rather a harmful effect.
