Historic Preservation

Algerian rural developpement
Hi,

It is hard to start this subject because it is so large, but in the end I have to take a first stab. I am a student in my fifth and last year of architecture high school in Algeria. I must do a project on the subject of the 'projet de proximite de developpement rural.' My site is the Boussemghoun Historic site with a ksar, an old urban building complex. The people living there left this ksar and built just near the old colonial village. I am trying to come up with ideas to make this old structure come to life. I hope that you can help. Next time, I'll try to provide photos, plans and my urban proposition.

Before trying to come up with a grand idea about how to breathe life into your site, ask what does this site need. Is there adequate housing? Do the people need jobs? Is there adequate infrastructure? Do they have access to education? The success of a project like this (in real life) depends on addressing the actual needs rather than the imagined needs. Often, solving a social problem can create a beautiful architectural solution.

I agree with Marika. this kind of project understanding of the context is essential. You have ventured in an area which exists and has been developed for a purpose .Now the context has changed so there would be a different purpose. This is what you need to find. Try to visualise a purpose that would respond to its text best, which kind of completes it. The soultion may be very simple yet it would give immense response. Look at Cristopher Alexander's works.

Democratisation in Pakistan has proved one thing through the offioce of councillor that is elected through in minimum cases with 1300 votes..So everyone is directly in touch with the nearest city centre ,where the courts are... Devbelopment in houseing i feel is 'giving out handouts or loans because the urban people rural communities live in national geographic when thety have democracy preace and money..money really comes from the real worth of thier goods...

I have maps of colonial homes and town sizes all are well organised but they suit labor colonies..Algerian labor need homes..

Dear / sir
I don't wanna to misunderstand u but from the indepandance in algeria and all the country work with central program; programs come from the capital made by porffessionals persons ..they don't have an idea about all village town need and environnemnt so all rural projects were limited in their resulats at end.
My idea was "" quand le site fait l'identit de projet'' when the site is the identity of the project ....the developpemnt come from town ----> regional----> country scale

I admire your confidence in the centre Brother abdelghani but you must realise that Algeria has become a poorest nation a third [class] world from a rich nation that hosted expensive talent from Europe . Without Democratisation and freedom from Military rule do not expect to achieve a Rural Distributor or a decision maker. The best way to develop the rural community homes or agriculture is to distribute cash for specified improvement.Do not fiddle Afrivcan paper with French pencils .

Abdelghani, You are talking about vernacular (homegrown) design at the "grassroots" level.

The key to any development (or redevelopment) is "what is the engine that drives the local economy?" When you define the engine, you can then arrange the design around it to suit / match the needs of the local people and culture. :)))

Dear : Frank
Boussemghon is a small village in the Monts ksours heritag but ..it's the key to understand this kind of rural architecure ...when you arrived there the 1st thing attract u the histroic scale ...or the useless scale more then that the locale language (berber and arabic) festivals .....but the problem is that the rural programs of the gouvernoment became later and they don't take the local specifications in considerations... u talk about the key of developpement i based on some examples in moroco an tunisia ( revitalition de ksar tamslouht in morroco, Ait iktel village ( la richess des pauvres) and i put as proirty the simple need (education , work ....)
and i find that the 1 st step is the resturation of Igherma (ksar)

Abdelghani, Okay, look at the websites for the old town of Safranbolu in Northern Turkey and for the school of architecture in Safranbolu, the Fethi Toker Faculty of the Beautiful Arts.

I have visited Safranbolu quite a few times over the years (1990, 1995, 1998, 2000 and stayed for two years 2004-2006).

Safranbolu has an ancient / medieval old town with about 1,000 traditional Ottoman style timber-frame houses and of course there are quite a few mosques and camis, a bathhouse and a caravansaray in the centre of the town together with streets for traditional crafts and a market or bazaar.

When I went to Safranbolu in 1990 it was a very quiet rural town (with one hotel in the new town), but with a lot of potential for tourism.

Today, Safranbolu is a booming tourist spot with quite a number of hotels in the old town and loads of tourists.

Therefore, perhaps the economic engine you need is cultural tourism?

Abdelghani, Oops! I almost forgot, yes, I can understand that the bureaucrats in government tend try and force the exact same solution upon different situations. This is well-known as "One Size Fits All". :(((

In every time I visit , the Monts ksour, in my way I look at this montains .
At this moment I understand why they chose this strategic area to build this kind of defensif urbain complexe.
This time I would like to share, another ksar pictures... just to give an idea about this lost world.

Abdelghani, The book "Arabic-Islamic Cities." by Hakim (KPI Pubs) should be of use to you in unfolding and illuminating the complexity of the ksar.
