Archetype of Buddhist Monastery
I am a student of MPhil in Architecture, UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL. My topic is to Determining archetype for South Asian Buddhist monastery.

You know, With the development of Buddhist religion, Buddhist monasteries developed from India and spread different parts of Asia. As a result of contextual impact South Asian Buddhist
monastery has a different archetype from South East Asia and East Asia. Architectural historian already tried to find out the archetype of different monasteries. But context which have impact on archetype of Buddhist monasteries still unveiled.

Let us try to find out the context.

Archetype of Buddhist Monastery
Angkor Wat, Borubodor and other remaining ruins were built in the age where Hindu-Buddhism was the main religion in South East Asia. Alike to the European Roman Empire and the spread of Roman Catholic from Rome to Constantinople, the ruins preserve histories of failures and successes. I believe the South Asian monastery made up the idea of the floating water lily in the Nusantara waters.

a. Nalanda Mahavihara, Bihar, India
b. Paharpur Vihara, Bangladesh.
c. Salban Vihara, Bangladesh.
d. Temple of Angkor Wat, Cambodia.
e. And some small Viharas of India and Bangladesh.
Do you or any one know some thing special about the architectural characteristics of these structures?

fake golden colour are usually bronze... don't be deceived... most are merely gold plated... nothing more than that. Italians and Turkish are mad about gold as well... especially the byzantine period.... but today, we value subdue and understated elegance...

imagine the medieval times when they wear false golden mask as a disguise...

Alike to most ancient monument / architectural principles in Asia. I believe the Monastry were built on the principles of balance and symetrical.

I think symmetricity common character for any ancient religious architecture to gain monumentality.

What you think about the similarities and differences in between Hindu and Buddhist temple complex?

err... before the existance of buddhism, there's a transition religion called, hindu-buddhaism which still survive in Bali island. This means, buddhaism main influence is the hindu temple before the local architecture took over.
