Design -- General

Thesis: transitional spaces
My thesis topic is transitional spaces, "in between spaces". My research will focus on the formulation of space and its design, looking into the rhythm and quality of it as a whole. I would also look into the types of transitional spaces on all scales. If you have any ideas or can help me in any ways, please do comment.

Hello, Tooba....we can say transition space as a breathing space between two activities. Thus it is d focused out space for the activities it serves.... the space can b used as a spill over for d surrounding tasks. u can ellaborate d topic by undertaking d study on elements enhancing it viz. landscpe, lighting, color, texture......which will add to d quality of d transition space......also u can hav study on scale n proportions of d space.....

im designing an elders home for my final year project. i want to make each space different from the rest, to provide a transition. in this aspect, as mentioned above in former discussions colour, texture could be used. it would be really nice if i can get more information on how to create more interesting transitional spaces through out the design

Tooba, I assume you are basing your thesis upon `transitional space` upon knowledge of the academic discipline known as "Spatial Morphology"?

Thesis: transitional spaces
Dhananjay, perhaps you should consider the involuntary or instinctive design of the ancient Greek schools, because several of these schools were known for walking about and discussing / debating issues while walking.

If memory serves, the term is "Peripatetic" and the definition on my Oxford English Dictionary says "[1] Aristotelian [from Aristotle`s custom of walking in Lyceum while teaching]". and "Lyceum" is defined as "Garden in Athens in which Aristotle taught, his philosophy and followers". In other words, such a garden can be considered to be an `open air` transitional space used for teaching and learning. :)
