Architecture and heritage
Hi,
When we talk about heritage of any place we talk about its architecture . But how are both related to each other? Often culture begins with religon and ends with it. If we have to spell out the heritage of any place why does it become biased to some particular religon ?
Does only temples or palaces define the heritage of a country?
what is the best way to revive the heritage of a country through architecture. Please help me with the answers.

True that the religion plays a key role in the cultural life of a nation or the people of apurticular region but if you want to get their attention to the non-religious monuments' preservation, first you have to educate them. People have to learn and feel that these are part of their cultural identity then you can get them to have their own contribution in preserving these heritage. To know your future steps you have to be aware of your past and bring this awareness to the present.

I understand people tends to stand with their believe based on their knowledge. But we can't stop put our hope on them. It's not an impossible thing to embrace people on conservation project, for example, you can see in UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation, some of the project initiate by local comunity. And in some country, settlement also part of the heritage of a country, in which the maintenance of their living area manage by themself.

I my view heritage should not be revived because it is dynamic. It should instead be conserved. To do so, the first thing is to recognize that it is dynamic, always in flux. Therefore, what should be isolated are the underlying factors that lead to a certain heritage and these factors then used as a guide in the protection of the same.

Heritage can be seen as a continuity of the past to the present and possibly to the future. Any thing that can survive the passage of time through the three phases can be an item of heritage. So all items of physical nature are of heritage interest. Architecture seems to be more visible and permanent due to its scale and steadfastness. Heritage could also be like folklore, beliefs, customs, etc. And it is at this level we tend to relate religion, architecture and heritage. This is so because political and religious patronage have been the substantial cause of architecture.

Heritage is not only the temple or palaces.it represents the habit, nature and the life style of the area.some build form of a perticular time represens the people of that time.not only the religon, but also many other things like life leading, occupation and many other things.heritage should be conserved because it gives message of a time.

architectural heritage should be conserved i agree. but what about the structures which have already been destroyed. how can one conserve them?
when heritage of a country is also described by its culture and tradition how can when preserve that? as it has lost its importance in the fast moving life. how can v give an architectural solution to all these problems. a place a enviornment where v can revisit the past and learn about the religon and traditions as well. the new generation has no time for learning the past nor they are intersted to. an enviornment should be created so as to make ppl learn the past and get acquinted with it.

Features belonging to the culture of a particular society, such as traditions, buildings, which still exist from the past and which have a historical importance are called the Heritage. so basically heritage can be divided into two: Tangible and Intangible.
Buildings of any types; palaces, temples, churches, mosques, monstries, dwelling houses; are catagorised in Tangible heritage. Architecture basically is art and science of designing and making buildings. That is why when we talk about heritge of any place we talk about its architecture. And the Architecture of the place reveals geography, history, culture of that place.

Hi, I disagree w/you that architecture is based on religion.Architecture of course reflects our heritage, but what is a heritage ? It's a combination of human acts and beliefs which includes religon.I'm Egyptian and if you go through the egyptian heritage starting from the pharoahs till the islamic architecture you see that not only the religon that affected the architecture which reflects our heritage. There are other aspects that might be taken into consideration.Climate for example, courtyards was a comman feature in most of the eras of architecture that egypt had seen for it's a good enviromental solution. There are common features between coptic and islamic architecture even common elements of decoration so that proofs that architecture is not totally ruled by religon. It's ruled by humman need and way of thinking. It is ruled by the ability of human to create according to his status. That's why I could be a muslim and fascinated by the gothic cathiderals and vice versa, it's a kind of art and human creation that's why it's a heritage and should be reserved. May be the new way to go through beside conservation is analyzing it to tools and using it in a contemporary way ready to meet our needs and thoughts.

Is architecture only about monumental buildings? Somehow I do not think so, because in order to be able to build monumental buildings, there needs to be both the economic base and the cultural tradition and skills.

Monumental churches from the Medieval period of history took several hundred years to build. So where did the builders live? and where did the people (who enabled these builders to live) live?

The fact that the buildings where people lived were not as durable as the monumental buildings does not detract from their value as architecture. :)))

Once again, I do share what you're saying Frank. Totally agree.
"Is architecture only about monumental buildings?"
There are two sort of heritage, I think: one is what Prof. Shahneshin calls "heritage that is outside that and us tangible 'the landscape' which is inside us intangible 'human culture'."
"Most of the issues surrounding the uses of heritage in contemporary economic, social or political policies result from a failure to define its meaning. This becomes particularly apparent and especially serious when heritage is expected to play diverse roles within sustainable development."
