I might also add, that the concept of privacy is large subject that need to be articulated.
Do you mean visual privacy?

additionally, it is really affected by the culture. an Islamic privacy in Istanbul is different than that in Islamic community in Tokyo.

And the Japanese cultural view of privacy is certainly different to the viewpoint in the West, because the Japanese culture in effect teaches people to mentally close their ears to things they should not listen even if they can hear them quite plainly.

regarding to privacy in housing we have "visual privacy, intra family privacy, family privacy ...
first of all, it is well cited about the importance of privacy of family in islamic point of view spacially the privacy of female members from strangers' eyes.
I know that the desire level of privacy is diffrent among diffrent cultures , but as the Islam is defined some rules for privacy it seems that muslims in diffrent cultures may have the common idea if not the same idea.

the traditional architecture of islamic societies spacially in middle east provided the highest level of privacy for residents spaciallt the visual privacy. in the inwardly oriented houses all family activities were happned hidden from strangers eyes.

by the modernization islamic societies introduced by the new residential architecture. it is more than 50 years that in many islamic societies new traditional houses are replacing with new apartments.

it is better to ask:

does the new life style is changed the desire level of privacy in this societies?

should we think in apartment designs to the highest level of privacy?

thank you from all of you,

Fatemeh, On this issue of privacy, I notice that in many if not most films and TV programmes, particularly dramas. People in homes always leave the curtains open even at night. This is not normal behaviour, but it helps the plots of dramas, if there is someone bad outside peering in the windows.

Privacy in islamic commities during the olden times was with the ' jaalie' windows. Thse allowed air ventialtion but at the same time provided a veil.
This is what I relate to privacy in islamic terms.

Fatemeh, Now I read the latest post. I recall that the newly built apartment in Turkey that I lived in, had `ceiling to floor` net curtains (what I would call American Drapes) and many other apartments had white opaque curtains which obscured vision from the outside. At night, blocks of apartments would only show light from occupied rooms, but nothing else.

This is a good topic discussion...

I think that privacy can still be provided even in 1,5x1,5m2 rooms, such as our privacy in most restrooms.

It is not such an impossible thing to maintain privacy by some mobile device in apartment, so it would still be flexible in any way and arrangements...

I also think that Islamic values such as privacy and so on can still be applied flexibly in any culture without losing its substances, cause these islamic values are universal. In application level, it can adapt local materials, forms, cultures and technologies.

Dear Frank John Snelling
thank you for your response
since you wrote about apartments in Turkey, it encouraged me to think about the concept of privacy in traditional and modern architecture of Islamic societies.
it is one of the most unspoken issues in contemporary architecture reserach .
by the way, when I was reading articles related to my area of study (my dissertation) I found diffeerent kinds of privacy in Islamic societies,
for example the concept of privacy and boundries in Malaysia and Iran are different.
I found that in arabic countries we may discuss about the men women domains in house, but in Malaysian traditional houses, we mostly can see the public and private domains.
by the way in Iran, we can mostly discuss about the privacy of residents from outsiders.
I would like to know, is there any body who propose a category for such a research?
can we categorize Islamic countries from climate perspective?
thank you every body for your contribution and useful comments.
best regards

Fatemeh, I have thought of something else, there is a very good book called "Arabic-Islamic Cities" by Hakim? (I can find the name) upon Islamic Urban Law along North Africa which sets out how neighbours and neighbouring buildings should interact and privacy between neighbours is an issue.

On the issue of what particular form privacy takes will change from culture to culture and from climate to climate.

can we do any thing for privacy?
Dear Fatemeh, another issue on the matter of domestic privacy in Islamic countries, is that while I was in Turkey, I lived in several apartments of varying ages and there were common features, the main one being that the bedrooms were the innermost spaces.

For instance in one modern apartment, the front door opened into a hallway which served the kitchen, the lounge, a guest bedroom or study and a toilet. then a door in the hallway was used to enclose an inner group of spaces which composed of a bathroom with a second toilet, and two bedrooms. The kitchen and lounge shared a balcony, the guest bedroom had a separate balcony and the main bedroom had a separate balcony.

Therefore this apartment had an outer group of spaces or Selamlik and an inner group of spaces as the Haramlik.

mr Alireza Daneshpour, sorry for very late reply. I don't know how to active an alert for new responses in archnet. I found your response all of a sudden. Eventhough I have changed my PhD dissertation topic, I would be happy if I can share with others my idea about this topic. all the best for your study.
