What type of roof is suitable for a building built with the Gypsum plaster Board Walls instead of other commonly used materials for the construction walls? And if these type of walls are constructed, what is the maximum permissible height of a building?
Please let me know as soon as possible.

Are you saying the walls are metal stud with gyp bd applied?

Your roof would ideally be a trussed roof with a suitable roofing material as shingles (wood/asphalt) etc. Also your walls would have to be load bearing.

Subhankar, How can plaster-board "walls" be load-bearing? I assume that you mean the roof trusses are supported on vertical load-bearing elements (columns, posts, frames) and the plasterboard is infill between.

Dear Frank, the plaster board walls can definitely be load bearing, but only when you use cold formed steel studs.

Hananeel, Thats what I added when I responded to Frank. If gypsum board panels are used as a non load bearing or as a partition infill, we would go for a metal stud framing and gypsum board panels laid over. Gypsum board cannot itself be load bearing, it has to be made into one by using cold formed steel studs instead of weak metal studs, which are used for interior partition walls. I hope I am clear now. I am sure, you would understand what I mean by cold formed steel, if not, just google it.

You can definitely use metal studs to create an exterior load bearing wall. This would have to be engineered, which an exterior metal framing contractor should be able to do. The height of the wall will be a function of this engineering calculation.

In such case gabbled or pitched roofs can be suggested.Galvanized Iron sheets(GI) will be suitable over the metal trusses and struts.Glass wool can be used for insulation of walls and roof.Wall height depends on the thickness of wall,comfort and economy.I will also not choose gypsum board for exterior walls however as partition walls such walls can be economical.

Subhankar, Your minimal and therefore oblique references to "cold formed steel studs" and "weak metal studs" leave me with no clear picture.

Because "stud" in my Oxford English Dictionary can mean [1] STUD = Large-headed nail, boss or knob, projecting from a surface; [3] STUD = Post to which lathes are nailed; STUDDING = woodwork of lath and plaster wall.

I assume you mean that steel studding or steel frames are used to support the gypsum plaster board (a technique I saw used in Turkey for internal partitioning).

However, I would like to know the difference between cold formed steel? and weak steel? without having to "google it"(as you so patronisingly wrote).

Furthermore, if gypsum plasterboard is used for an external wall, I would be interested to know how this waterproofed?

Similarly, given that Gypsum Plasterboard is relatively soft and is easily damaged, I would be interested to know how the surfaces are protected?

Thank you for your response. I should have been explicitly clear whilst responding. The dictionary meaning of a 'stud' which you have referred to from Oxford English dictionary is perfectly right. Here I meant G.I or Steel posts, wherein the gypsum board sheets would be screwed.
Regarding the next part of your query, I would like to tell you that I was responding to Hananeel, wherein I asked him to refer to the internet, in case the term 'cold formed steel' is not clear. However, since you have asked me the same, the following is for your information:
A cold formed steel member is one which has been formed by pressing or rolling thin steel gauges at room temperature. Standard shapes may be c-sections/ angle sections/ channel sections as per governing standards (In India, we have Indian standard sections), whereas weak metal studs would basically refer to Galvanized Iron sections, which are typically used for interior works. (I never said 'weak steel')
I am aware of the disadvantages of usage of Gypsum plasterboard for external wall in water absorption and likely damages to the surfaces, but the inception of this discussion started with the assumption that Gypsum plasterboard shall be used as a external wall. However, there are ways to tackle the same too:
- Usage of Covalent water proofing for gypsum board walls. (Eg. Elastomeric waterproofing) or usage of moisture resistant gypsum boards.
However, I would prefer the usage of Waterproof Fibre-cement boards, instead of gypsum board panels for external wall facing, if given a choice.

Subhankar, Thank you for your explanations in answer to my post.

Personally speaking, I would never use plasterboard for outside walls because weather and human wear and tear will eventually cause enough damage to be beyond repair and the whole (wall) has to be replaced.

On the other hand, if the structure is a quick and temporary fixture (perhaps pre-fab housing built after a disaster), then such immediate need outweighs the need for permanence.

Frank, I do agree with you with the plaster board wall usage part. We do use plaster board walls in case of temporary site structures as site offices too, which are normally demolished as the site progresses.
