3. Different types of arches
4. Construction details of arches

Most important thing here is the different materials used and the type of construction process involved.

Ummu, An interesting subject because an arching element can be in two dimensions (arch) or three dimensions (dome). The way I understand the history of the arch is that in ancient times windows, doorways, roofs and spaces were "corbelled".

In other words each layer of brick or stone was projected slightly beyond until they met in the middle. The only problem being is that there was no structural cohesion between each layer. Whereas, the arch (or dome) relies upon a keystone in the centre and all of the other segments of the arch can then take the force of gravity.

In passing, please note that corbelled corners and niches are a feature of Islamic architecture. And a wonderful case of a Medieval three-dimensional arched "space frame" is the Mesquita Mosque in Cordoba in Spain.

Hi Ummu Jessima, I guess you must concentrate on the ancient types & materials of arch construction. Also consider how the humble keystone played a major role in keeping the arch in position. Also think about its evolution from corbelled arches to true arch & finally the magnificent vaults of the great Churches of Mediaeval Europe.
