Impact of modernism and architecture on contemporary Kuwait versus pre-oil discovery era
How has modernism influenced the architecture in Kuwait? It is true that Kuwait had transformed economicaly as well as in architecture in comparison to the pre-oil era on the contrary to the contemporary Kuwait but how has memory (kuwait history) impacted Kuwait and the architecture of Kuwait?

I think "oil-urbanization" is the right word for these cities. Other examples are Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Riyadh. First comes oil then then urban development and then water. After that "architecture is made by people" and later "people are made by architecture".

Actually oil brought such wealth and culture to Gulf Region which transformed lifestyle and architecture of the west that native originality remained in clothing because of climate and comfort and food because it is really difficult to please new to pallate. Architecture of the west influenced the Gulf as banking became essential change factores, now through tourism governments are trying to keep rich culture floating. Within a few years currancy dominance shall change the world scene, and urban sprawl in the Gulf as well.

I am not sure that oil brought culture or rather "bought culture". The Gulf region is an interesting mix of clashing ideas and styles. I think that cities such as Kuwait, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi should stop pretending that they are anthing but crass, hyper-capilist cities, infact, they should celebrate it. Look at Vegas, it does not pretend to be done in taste, its completely over the top and revels in it. The Gulf cities should just get rid of their baggage and stop trying to recreate a culture that barely existed there. Domes on skyscrapers are just silly not Islamic.

I think modernity is part of the processes of development in any part of the globe; however, it has to be addressed carefully and the processes of monitoring it require careful judegement as to what needs are more pressing in the country. Over all, it has to be in congurent with the culture of the Kuwaities while at the same time flurish a pluralistic enabling environment for excellent islamic architecture as a symbol of Islam's message of peace, unity and respect for life and human degnity in general. The oil or any resources can be useful in these respect.
