Al-Madrasa al-Zahiriyya is located between the Kamiliyya and the Firdows madrasas, about 500m south of Bab al-Maqam. It was built by al-Zahir al-Ghazi in 1217. The building consists of an entrance portal which opens onto an oblong courtyard with two tripartite arcades on the north and south ends, a deep iwan on the east end, and a group of small rooms on the west end. The mosque is a tripartite structure covered with domes with a malqaf (wind-catcher) inserted in the southeastern dome over the mausoleum. The study hall is located on the southern half of the western bay, while the living quarters are in the northwestern area.
