Butabu - Adobe Architecture
of West Africa
James Morris, photographer
James Morris is a British based photographer with a particular specialisation
in architecture and cultural landscapes. Working with both contemporary architects
and on projects related to historical and vernacular buildings, his work has taken
him across Europe, North America, Egypt, Yemen, Morocco and West Africa. The public
exposure of his work is through magazines, books and exhibitions.
In 1999 and 2000, James Morris spent time in West Africa photographing mud architecture
in Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso. These 60 photographs
represent a small sample of his beautiful work. In 2002 he was awarded a grant
by the Graham Foundation to produce a touring exhibition of the work. The exhibition
consist of 70 images. In November 2003, "Butabu - Adobe Architecture of
West Africa" was published by Princeton Architectural Press. [ See review
