Swiss Chancellery
Algiers, Algeria
The three-story Chancellery, next to the existing Swiss embassy residence and both in the same garden, appears fresh, white and radiant, projecting a peaceful atmosphere. White X-shaped concrete columns, upon which the roof rests, are reminiscent of a diagonally stretched Swiss cross (26 different types representing Switzerland’s cantons) combine to form a complex structure that recalls the filigreed abstract motifs of Arabic art. These reinforce against seismic activity and protect an inner façade made of oiled oak. Pedestrian access is through the basement, the consular area is above with direct access to the Embassy residence via a stairway covered by a pergola, and a stairway leads to the first floor. A red/orange tiled terraced roof creates an external reception area.
