I am currently working on a presentation for my 'Green Building' class and have chosen the Jean Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center in New Caledonia as my case study.
I have found some interesting information about the center and about the planning of the center by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. I was wondering if there was anyone who had some thoughts or criticisms that they would like to share about the complex within the context of 'green' architecture. I am using the Canadian LEED document as a guideline to understand the various strategies and tactics that were used in the design of the center. Unfortunately, I have never been to New Caledonia myself but am fascinated with the ideas that the designers tried to convey with this project.

Hi Hana
I came across your posting whilst researching the JMT Cultural Centre for my dissertation.
I realise it's been a while since you posted your message but i thought i'd get in touch as i have some interesting informtion which may help.
I'm in my final year studying for an architecture degree in London and my dissertation is about eco-centric (green/sustainable etc) architecture and whether, in a contemporary global political and social context, such architecture could be considered a form of activism.
The JMT centre interests me as it is a beautiful building and in architectural terms it is sensitive to the indigenous culture and landscape - an all round good example of 'green' design.
However, its' historical and political context is more dubious as it's a product of colonial power and the struggle for indigenous rights in New Caledonia. This interests me as i'm trying to link architecture with a broader social/political/economic context.
I'd be happy to share this information with you if you still need it for your project, or just out of interest.
Also, what is the LEED document and where can i find it? i've not heard of it before.
Best Regards Ben Rogers

Hana,
I was wondering if you could by any chance send me some of the information you used for this project. I have a group project and we are basically doing an abstract model of the Cultural Center...we have to have all the background and structural functions of the building. So if you can if you still have the websites or info., please let me know.
