You can use many different materials for normal houses. The important issue is to stiffen the building, normally by seismic bands that take tension forces. This used to be wood, today it is reinfoced concrete.
If there is no roof slab (which can kill people if not supported by a safe structure), it is very important to have the bands bending resistant against horizontal forces. For details look at the international recommendations under iaee.or.ip or nicee.org
