Conflict and Natural Disasters

Architectural responses to seismic Resistant building design
"Earthquake itself does not kill people but unsafe buildings do." An engineer had told this after visiting the earthquake site.

Architects and engineers are trying hard in creating safe built environment against the natural disasters like flood, landslide, cycloone etc.

Amount of steel required, foundation, size of beam and coulmns etc.are something considered by the structural engineers.

But as an architect what can we do in creating seismic resistant building design?

I think architect has more responsiblity as he conceive the building first. If architect envisage the seismity than he would play with the mass and form of the building.I am emphasizing this because most of the buildings fails due to its massive form, which are offcourse designed by architects without keeping in mind propotion and all.I am sure, failure of buildings come first from its form and details you mentioned come later.
I will come up with some more ideas in couple of days.

Architectural responses to seismic Resistant building design
Deepak, as I have said before on this topic of earthquake resistant buildings.

One of the main problems is the fact that most if not all engineers and architects who design buildings assume that the earth will never move and therefore when it does move, this is so alien to their understanding that they react by using what they already know, which is how to build on non-moving earth.

I have made the point before that Marine Engineers and Naval Architects are needed to design bulidings which will survive future movement of the earth.

I say marine engineers and naval architects, because boat and ship designs are (a) structurally self-supporting and (b) float on the surface of moving masses.

I feel a building cannot be made 100% earthquake proof, but magnitude of human losses can be minimised if architect & structural engineers seat side by side from initial stage of designing..
