Interior Design

Eco Design and Sustainable Design
Good day! I am a senior student from the Philippines, taking up BS Interior Design. I am currently working on a thesis about Eco Design application on a Resort Hotel Interior. I would like to ask about the differences between eco design and sustainable design. Your response would be very much appreciated, Thank you.

Eco Design and Sustainable Design
Hillary, A good question to which I would like a definitive answer myself.

As I understand the matter, these words "eco (ecological?) design" and "sustainable design" have only appeared as `cutting edge` jargon phrases within the past decade and appear to mean the same thing, so it is more a matter of personal taste as to which phrase you choose to use.

In fact, this sudden interest upon the part of `cutting edge` architects and designers is welcome but ironic, because ecological / sustainable / vernacular design in architecture has always been around since the dawn of time, the only exception being massive public buildings which are (a) built of more durable materials (brick, stone, concrete, glass) and (b) built uneconomically / unsustainably.

In other words "eco(logical) design" and "sustainable design" are simply a reinvention of vernacular design.

sustainable design uses elements and products which uses less of energy and has less of carbon footprint....the other term used is eco-friendly design, where rain water falling on roof tops is harvested[stored in under ground tanks or recharged in existing water bore]....natural materials are used insted of synthetic and plastic materials[which takes long time to recycle....intersting and very usefull concept you have desided to work....keep it up.

Regarding "sustainability of the planet", according to an article last week in the business section of a national newspaper, currently most of the plastic waste salvaged in the UK is sent to China to be reprocessed.

In other words, plastic waste shipped to China has an unnecessary "Carbon Footprint" in terms of fossil-fuels used, etc. :(

We can differentiate by just simply in these words that "eco” design is the practice of reducing or eliminating environmental impacts of design. And on the other hand sustainable design is concerned with the environment."

Allan, There is not much difference between "ecological" and "sustainable" because both words imply they work in harmony with the environment and therefore both can be classed as forms of neo-vernacular design.

The only difference I can see is that (a) When the building design works in harmony with the environment and in particular the building design works with the climate and not against the climate. (ie low tech passive heating and cooling as against expensive, Hi-Tech, high energy, heating and cooling systems). and (b) when the materials used for the building either come from reusuable / recyclable sources, or when the materials are sourced locally.

Frank John Snelling,i agreed with you on some points that you stated above.

From this image, it is clear that eco designs are related to environment only, but sustainable designs also include social issues into it. I came to know about this difference while looking for some good table designs at jarrimber.

Let there be no mistake, to remove the concept of culture from the human equation is the same as removing the concept of ethnicity and this behaviour is nothing less than the worst form of ethnic-cleansing. :(((

If you look at the carbon foot print, don't forget the energy consumed during the life time of the building.
If you can avoid or reduce the requirement for airconditioning, you safe a lot of Co2.
So the good old climatic design is important. Best is to simulate the building, but applying what Koenigsberger wrote in his book about climatic design helps also a lot.
