Hello Imie,
I think you might've introduced your topic a bit abruptly. What I am able to understand is that you might be trying to do a dissertation on "colour psyhcology and it's impact on space". There is an entire field of study devoted to colour psychology. There are in fact colour specialists that advise interior designers on matters of chroma. I'd advise you to research that before you decide to hand out questionaires.

Hi, Imie
Restaurants have two major design aspects: theme which will include concept, materilas, color, visuals, cutlery, crockery, music, etc; and, theactual practical working of the restaurant which basically means that what evr you choose should be easy to access, east to maintain and should not fall apart soon after construction. The colors and materials depend on the theme. They change with fashion and there are no hard and fast rules. Darker woods are used in formal spaces and lighter wood in casual area. Agian no defined rules. The newer colors are deep plum, crimson red, aqua, midnight blue. and brushed steel is used frequently with wood. Stones are also common, with a variety of treatments. Floors are mostly lighter. Darker floors catch dust. Lighting plays a major role in the over all impact.

basic elements of intierior space are furniture and space around is drametized by lighting,if the environment is visually conected to outdoors then the scene/foliage/texture/movement etc needs balanced colours to enhence embience food and whole act of dinning, keeping all this in mind bright yellow with small red dots with emple of white good for walls and cellings, rest is play free to each site and designer should go for.intersting resuls can be many, have fun and share it with dinners.

hi asad!
at first it was the exact topic i've chosen..then now i feel i don't have enough time to make a thorough research.my advisor lecturer advise me either i do that topic or choose the other topic.i'm thinking that by doing colour and it's impact on space,i must do some questionaire and ask the customer in the restaurant...which i think it might disturb them or didn't get their cooperation..by doing this topic what the customer feel while they are in the restaurant is so important..then my advisor suggest me not to do the questinaire..just the observation..that's why i change my topic to colour in the interior restaurant.if i do colour and it's impact on space, certainly i must do the questionaire because it is all about the human psycology while in the restaurant..every person have their own perception..i think by chosing the second one,i don't need to do the questionare, just some observation and my opinion or review according to literature..so,what do u think now??

hello imie,
i honestly think that you should delve into the topic u intially chose....what you have right now i.e. colour in a restauant is a cop out. it doesn't do justice to 'colour' or 'interior design'. you must start from the broader perspective of colour design and if you wish you may focus on a certain application of it.

and in either way the 'questionaire' is irrelevant. very few ppl are conciously sensitive to colour. colour psychology is an observed phenomena by professionals, it affects the lay man subconciously.

remember, imie, this is your dissertation, it is supposed to be about something that you believe in. let it be thorough, let there be tons reasearch. in this profession what u believe matters and shapes you as the designer you wish to be.

goodluck.

Hi Imie,
Iagree with Asad that the broader the topic in this research, the more fulfilling the outcome would be. reacting to Color is a very sensetive and yet unconscious sense, and it is so important and yet very few architects take it seroiulsy; if you speak of the scientific point of view.
I hope other members enlighten us with what they know on this issue.

Dear Imie,
you could be very confused still about how to design an interior space or how to think about what colors you should use. The reason for this is that you don't have a "concept" for it. Once you deside on a concept it'll be then easier to decide what colors you like to use. For example, ask yourself what you want the space to give you of FEELS...romantic? sociable? conversational, crazy? ...etc, then gather similar words and feelings for it..after that, know what colors have these words in their translation....meaning, white have purity and cleanliness...blue, calmness , yellow has fun and happiness, and so forth....this way, you'll have the basic colors you need ...then you can play with them within the space of interest.the concept can be a sentence too, like royal gems, or tropical breeze...etc.
don't forget , if you're also cosidering designing the lighting that it has alot of impact.
I hope this help...let me know if you need any help on color meanings once you develope a concept.

hi imie !

I find this a very interesting theme. today in a global world, where everything is the same, it is really important to create a nice atmosphere in restaurants, where you can eat, talk, meet people,etc.....so in one room there are different "functions" during a day. and you can change these different atmosphere with colours in form of lights/lamps. for morning: green - to refresh, during day: blue - cold, for business meetings and at night: red - to stimulate.

all the best !

Sustaining the ambience of restaurant is the most crucial thing. Ambience of welcome, ease, activity, vibrancy and colour as you mentioned Imie. Soft lights change the moods and colours changes the mood so if both are synergised and blended it will be great.
but what's the theme in restaurant, it's FOOD.
visible food excites the senses with anticipation even before it is served.
so smell factor with colour comes...how colour can bring such lovely anticipations, bring out interactions?..

its just a hint..you take over...as you are real doer of your thesis.
