Alawite ruler, born in Sijilmassa, capital of Tafilalet. In 1792 when his brother Yazid was assassinated, he was proclaimed Sultan by the people of Fès (1792), but he has to impose his rule in over his brother who also claimed the throne from Marrakech.  Under his reign the country experienced relative prosperity and stability.
