Manta Resort Underwater Room
Pemba Island, Tanzania
The Underwater Room on Pemba Island is constructed on three levels with two beds under the water, a lounge area in the middle and a sunbed / stargazing platform on top. The Room was developed by Swedish engineers and designers, and built partly in Dar es Salaam and partly on Pemba Island. Cooperation with local craftsmen created a unique room with local features incorporated. Materials used in its construction were steel, glass, concrete and local hardwood. The structure is designed to become a floating reef that coral and marine life could flourish around. The Underwater Room has created an awareness of the plight of the coral reefs around Pemba Island and demonstrates that responsible tourism can help the environment.
