course description
Year
2022

Building adequate housing for the poor is a pressing issue worldwide. With close to a billion people living in slums, accommodating a growing population, and improving dwelling conditions across the globe is a critical challenge. This is not a challenge that can be tackled with a one-size-fits-all approach, for every city, region and country has its own housing models and prototypes. Hence, housing design needs to negotiate many aspects simultaneously if it wishes to achieve sustainable urban environments and inclusive dwelling communities.

This course has been developed for the Education Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. It uncovers how social, economic, and environmental factors are interrelated in housing design by diving into three key aspects that must be taken into consideration: time, environment, and community.

Global Housing Design was the recipient of the 2022 EdX seventh annual Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning.
