Masjid Aqeel

Masjid Aqeel or Aqeel Mosque is known as the oldest mosque in Salalah, Oman. It is said to have been founded by Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Aqil Ba’amer and was completed by Abdullah bin Ahmed bin Aqil bin Zain Ba’amer and named for the jurist Sayyid Aqil bin Imran Ba’amer who died in 1652 AD. Its construction relied on limestone and wood, as well as fibers of the coconut tree, shells, and clay. The mosque has been renovated and expanded throughout the centuries, most recently in 2008 after part of the structure collapsed. It has served as an important gathering place for religious and social ceremonies and lessons in Islamic jurisprudence.
