Plovdiv Old Town Renovation
Plovdiv, Bulgaria
The old town consists almost exlusively of buildings erected between the 17th and 19th centuries, among them churches, private dwellings, and a Turkish mosque. An extensive rehabilitation programme has been drawn up to include the general area located on the three hills of ancient Trimontium and the adjacent quarters to the south and west. The programme comprises:
- adaptation of the road network to the needs of modern transport;
- definition of a zone of interest for archeological research;
- reconstruction of destroyed areas around isolated historical buildings;
- construction of new areas along the highly degraded fringe of the protected area; and
- restoration of buildings, monuments, and areas of historical interest for public use, including the restoration of the only Muslim religious monument within the protected area.
