Tanzania Parliament
Dodoma, Tanzania

The first parliamentary building in East Africa to adopt indigenous themes in its design, the debating chamber’s conical-roofed form recalls traditional African huts, while details such as the domed entrance canopy derive from Islamic architectural influences common in Tanzania. Labour and materials – reinforced concrete for the main structure, stone for external walls and paving – were sourced locally; artworks by Tanzanian artists adorn the interior; and the acoustic cladding is faced with African teak. Revolving aluminium fins control the amount of sunlight admitted through the central glare-reducing rooflight. The horseshoe arrangement of the seating encourages harmonious rather than adversarial interaction. The building has prompted a revitalisation of the .surrounding urban area.
