Swahili Beach Hotel
Mombasa, Kenya
The architecture of this coastal resort finds inspiration in the blending of influences from East Africa, Arabia, India, and Zanzibar as assimilated in the Swahili culture. Rounded domes, pointed arches and mashrabiya are employed in the interior and exterior of this 140 room complex finished in stucco and plaster in a restrained palette. Laid out around a central water feature cascading down to the beach, the main structure sits on top of the hill, while two storey units with balconies and patios, giving onto the water, are arranged on each side. Both exotic and indigenous vegetation have been extensively planted to offset the carbon footprint.
