It was a settlement on the route of Alexander the Great, and was also part of Asoka's empire. It is the site of Buddhist rock and pillar edicts. Kandahār was held by Moguls (17th century), by Persians (18th century), and by the British (19th century). It is now Afghanistan's second largest city and a major trade center.
