This essay surveys recent developments, both in relation to the study of Western architectural history and within the field of the history of Islamic architecture. Even if periodicals take more note of Islamic architecture, book publication is still heavily weighted towards Western architecture. Within the broader field, however, there is an encouraging trend towards more engagement with material from the nineteenth century onwards and with new methodologies.
