Mandhry Mosque Expansion
Mombasa, Kenya
A 16th century mosque reputed to be the oldest mosque in use in the old town area. It is a well maintained two-storey building constructed in coral rubble finished with lime plaster. Originally, the mosque was only one level, pressure from population growth and the need to have a madrasa" and prayer space for ladies neccessited an additional storey in 1988 and again in 1992. In response to those needs the expansion of the mosque had to take several issues into consideration:
