Shiraz Nassir Al-Molk Mansion Restoration
Shiraz, Iran

Besides regular conservation and restoration in the house, the main challenge for the designers was how to manage the semi-ruined remains of the western corridor that was partly removed to create new traffic systems. They invented a novel solution by keeping the present boundaries of the house and restoring the vestibule (hashti) with semi-transparent brickwork. Most importantly, they exhibited the removed rooms of the ground and first floor, with subtle effects on the façade, by changing patterns of the brickworks like an architectural drawing of the section, on a 1:1 scale. The western façade has now become an urban billboard demonstrating the spaces behind this façade, cut and removed by street works.
