Rosenberg Cemetery Extension
Winterthur, Switzerland

To reach the goal of integrating the immigrant population more strongly into the life of Winterthur, one step taken was to facilitate the burial of deceased members of different religious groups. The establishment of an Islamic burial place within the existing cemetery was approved for a Muslim community accounting for around 12% of the population. Two approaches lead to a broad concrete path, where small trees are planted at intervals. This path gives access to the graves. The plots are divided by walls of rough limestone concrete, oriented towards Mecca. A new fountain of polished limestone has been installed, and low box hedges separate the burial area from the neighbouring countryside. In a central position is a facility for mourners to take leave of the deceased.
