Housing for Disaster Victims
Various Locations in Pakistan, Pakistan
Going against the grain of using concrete blocks, steel girders and galvanized iron sheets to build "pucca" housing for the victims of natural disasters, this project has involved the construction of several hundred shelters in local materials such as earth, lime and bamboo, improved with the use of technical innovations, to achieve sustainability as well as DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) compliance. Taking the needs of, in particular, women affected by disaster and displacement into account, the project has refined a number of low-cost, low-carbon footprint typologies over time, building not only housing units but also toilets, smokeless stoves, community preschools, centres and dispensaries.
