Tanouan Ibi Primary School
Bandiagara, Mali
The School, on the vast plain of Dogon Country, comprises three classrooms, a principal’s office, a depot, a sanitary block and a garden in an area of 200 m2, serving 180 students. The building, with a barrel vault, has a porch on each side as structural support for the impressive vault of seven metres. Porches also provide shade and establish a meeting place for village elders. The non-fired hydraulic-compressed earth blocks used are produced using soil on site, are sustainable and can withstand the climate of both hot sunlight and heavy rainfall; their colour and use on floor, walls and roof subtly integrate the building into the environment. In the evening the school is used for teaching village women.
