Ghata Structures
Various Locations in Lebanon, Lebanon

Ghata (or, cover) is a shelter system designed to ensure humane and decent living conditions for Syrian refugees currently in makeshift tents. Its guiding principles are: simplicity and portability, adaptability and scalability; climatic responsiveness; and economic efficiency. Each unit is structured along a modular grid system based on a plywood panel of 1.2 m x 2.4 m, using a primary support of four steel columns. Two refugees can assemble one unit in six working hours. Six Ghata schools have been assembled in Bekaa and each school can cater for 700 refugee schoolchildren on a double-shift-basis. A health clinic (60 m2) was designed at each school campus, as well as a vocational centre with six workshops.
