House of Niches
Najafabad, Iran
This House evokes the past in a contemporary way in Najafabad where, as old houses in areas wooded with pine were demolished, the niches inside the homes were revealed. It is composed of two small cubes, set free from an eastern wall which is filled with numerous niches, and exposes a neighbouring pine tree. Morning light brightens both floors through leaving empty space at the east, rather than the south of the site, challenging municipal regulations. Designed for a family of four with a guest unit upstairs, the wall offers privacy, veiling the rooftop and introverting the house and its open spaces.
