SOS Children's Village
Jamshoro, Pakistan
Built within the premises of a large university campus, the project houses orphaned and abandoned children, offering a nurturing and secure environment as well as educational and training facilities. The design has been conceived as a series of traditional "mohallas" or neighbourhoods, with residential units are arranged around a common open space; an enclosure of four houses, each accommodating 10 children and a house mother make up each mohalla (four such clusters have been designed). The complex includes a clinic, auditorium, library, computer lab, mosque and ample play areas. Living units have wind catchers, traditional to the region, to cool the interiors, and screens and trellises and heavy plantings provide shade and insulation.
