The "Dara" is an urban campus devised from the rehabilitation and re-use of a complex of heritage houses in Jabal Amman that were built between the late 19th century and the 1970s, and now houses architecture studios, labs, lecture halls, library, offices and student centre and cafeteria of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment of the German Jordanian University. The project, which includes a two-storey villa from the 1920s, a 1950’s three-storey office block and annex, took two years to complete with a team of architects, engineers and craftsmen. The resulting urban campus is a novel concept in Jordan, and has led to the revitalization of the surrounding area.
