Gazi Köşkü
Diyarbakır, Turkey
The garden residence known as Gazi Köşkü or Atatürk Köşkü is located south of Mardin Gate off the main highway. It is a grand house dating from the Ottoman if not Aq Qoyunlu period that was made famous when Atatürk used it as a base during the military disputes between Turkey and Russia over the frontier in 1916-1917. The plan of the house is based around a large iwan that runs from north to south. A water channel runs from the rear of the iwan down the center, then through an underground passage toward a pool outside the north facade. On one side of the iwan is the kitchen. On the other is the reception area.
