Zand Historic House
Shiraz, Iran
This house dates to the Zand period and is notable for the large bas-relief on an exterior wall. Located on the lower register of a the windowed reception hall, the relief spans the length of a large reflecting pool that lies alongside the house. Subjects include riders on horseback, and figures from Persian literature such as the sculptor Farhad. The vivid blue background of the relief panel is interspersed with waterlilies and other decorative motifs. It was viewed in the 1960s by Andre Godard, and photographed by Baroness Marie-Thérèse Ullens de Schooten. The exact location of the house, and its present condition, is unknown.
