Restoration of the Janissary Quarter
Algiers, Algeria

The historical building was restored to house part of the Art and History Museum of Algiers. It spreads on two levels underneath the north-west wall of the citadel and includes an independent forepart. A large square three-naved room, that was originally the janissaries’ headquarters, is now used for meetings and conferences. The rest of the restored infrastructure will accommodate part of the exhibition rooms as well as offices for the museum’s staff. The project’s aim was to bring back part of the citadel to its former glory, while allowing the local community to access an important part of their heritage.
