IBTASEM Playground for Syrian Refugee Children
Bar Elias, Lebanon
Responding to the needs of Syrian refugee children living in camps in Bar Elias for safe, recreational spaces, the playground was developed with the close participation of the community to ensure that their needs were being met and that they would feel ownership of the space. The playground provides multiple opportunities for play--interactive spaces, educational spaces, spaces for imaginative play, and private spaces as well, since most refugee children live in one-room tents or households do not have any space to be alone. The construction was guided by the need to be easy to build (by the community), easy to dismantle (when they leave), and safe.
