Paradise Has Many Gates is artist Ajlan Gharem’s first large-scale installation work--a 10 x 6.5 metre mosque constructed from industrial steel. While true to the design and function of a traditional Islamic place of worship, the material used, industrial steel, is the same material that Western countries use to erect fences at their borders to keep out refugees and migrants. The structure is cage-like, evoking feelings of being imprisoned. The work has no permanent home; it has been shown in Riyadh, Manama, Houston, Texas, and Vancouver.
