The new 12-storey facility is an addition to the national hospital. A 5-storey operating block is recessed from and located above a podium that contains two floors of parking.&nbsp;Rooms for 380 patients are contained in two connected 5-storey blocks that are positioned above the medical areas, with an upper terrace between them.&nbsp;The structure is a concrete frame, with steel for the cantilevered portions of the two blocks of patients’ rooms.&nbsp;Importance was given to providing natural lighting for both the medical staff and patients, and to a variety of outdoor gathering and relaxation areas as well as interior and exterior playgrounds for children.
