District Office of Tunis Municipality
Tunis, Tunisia

In the historic medina of Tunis, the two-storey building organised around an open courtyard originally housed a Catholic boys’ school before becoming the Danish Consulate; it was later used again as a school, and then as temporary housing before being abandoned in the 1990s. The current project is the renovation and re-use of the building as a district office for the Municipality of Tunis. Following detailed survey and analysis of the badly deteriorated building, the rehabilitation works included excavation and consolidation of the piers and columns that support the ground floor cross-vaults and consolidation of the load-bearing rubble walls; the timber structural members were also consolidated and, where necessary, repaired.
