Volga Promenade and Open-Air Museum
Bolgar, Russian Federation

Conceived as a public promenade punctuated by open-air installations that explain the history of Turkic-Tatar civilisation, the riverbank park extends along the banks of the Volga River and is part of the State Historical-Architectural Museum Reserve included in Unesco’s World Heritage List in 2014. The site of the 1.3-km promenade has a slope of ten metres, and leads from Bolgar Museum to the historic Well of Gabdrahman. The pedestrian path and open exhibition areas are paved with granite and stone blocks; the parallel bicycle path is paved with asphalt. Benches, fencing, waste bins, and pergolas form part of the design, and the natural vegetation of the embankment was enhanced with new plantings including a labyrinth area created from hedges.
