Situated on a 2512 square metre plot, this two-storey mosque dispenses with a boundary wall, which is normally a regulation for mosque designs in Dubai, and instead remains open to and in dialogue with its surroundings through its facade, which has a three-sided riwaq or arcade that provides entry to the mosque. In its form, it attempts to reclaim the Arab hypostyle typology of Islam’s earliest mosques, moving away from iconic mosque architecture that is common in Dubai. In keeping with this inclusive spirit, the women’s area is centrally located and within the same physical space as the men’s prayer hall, separated by a perforated screen.
