Slum Reconstruction
Dhaka, Bangladesh

640 homes in two slum areas - Karail and Saat-tola - were devasted by fire in 2016; this rebuilding project was undertaken by a pro-bono group of architects and university student volunteers in collaboration with the residents, and with government approval. Main access roads and internal arteries were widened, and public water and sanitation facilities were planned and implemented. Model house layouts were developed and revised with the residents, with an emphasis on natural light and ventilation for adequately-sized rooms and open courtyards. The homes are built from concrete columns with brick infill for the lower ground floor, then metal sheeting up roof-level; and roofing is corrugated metal. Upper floors of some homes are built with timber or bamboo posts.
