This project is based on the understanding that environmental design can affect people’s choices - where they go, what they do and their general insight of places. This in turn influences their perception of safety, whether perceived or real. The Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) programme in Khayelitsha aims to nurture sustainable and integrated communities, by addressing these issues and perceptions. VPUU is a partnership between the German government under the leadership of the German Development Bank, the South African National Treasury, the City of Cape Town and the residents of Khayelitsha.
